It’s the wonderful York Open Studios this April when 144 artists, designers and makers across the beautiful city of York are inviting people into their studio spaces. With 97 studios to choose from it’s often tricky working out which to visit!
Here are three suggestions…
Kayti Peschke’s colourful ceramics are all made with practicality in mind, from that perfect mug that makes every brew feel extra special, to homewares that are a treat for the eyes. Kayti is sharing a space with jewellery designer Joanna Wakefield for this years Open Studios where she will be creating a ceramic installation with a botanical theme, as she really wants it to feel like an experience to visit! Visitors will also be able to enjoy drinks served in her ceramic cups while they look around too! https://www.yorkopenstudios.co.uk/artist/here-be-monsteras-ceramics
A visit to Mark Hearld’s home based studio is always a treat. As well as an opportunity to view a wide selection of work by this award winner illustrator and designer, whose distinctive designs for textiles and wallpaper are produced by St Judes, and commissions include work for Faber & Faber and Tate Museums this is also a chance to discover more about his interests and inspiration. Expect to see lithographic and linocut prints, unique paintings, collages and hand-painted ceramics. https://www.yorkopenstudios.co.uk/artist/mark-hearld
Shared artist spaces such as the Pica Studios, housed in an 18th Century printworks on the medieval Grape Lane, offer a chance to see a variety of artists working alongside each other, including jewellers, textile designers, illustrators, painters and printmakers. Kitty Pennybacker is one of the artists you will find at PICA, a knitwear designer who combines cording, knitting, weaving and felting to create a collection of super soft homeware items. Working solely with wool, Kitty hand creates blankets, cushions and scarfs using rare techniques – she specialises in using Yorkshire wool, working with Z. Hinchcliffe who have been producing yarn on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales for over 250 years. https://www.yorkopenstudios.co.uk/artist/kitty-pennybacker
